Hi, Long Time No Posty

SO. I am really bad at this whole blogging thing. Even on Facebook I'm bad at it. I will try to be better!

WHAT I HAVE BEEN UP TO:
Harpery -- been playing and practicing a LOT and learning new tunes! As things have been opening back up event-wise I have been bringing my wee harp, though I haven't gathered the courage to play it for anyone yet in public. XD Soon though! I have a pretty solid repertoire of tunes in hand, about five of them that just need a bit more practice and polish before they're performance-ready. I'm still studying with Mistress Telynor too, and we've been working out arrangements for some of those tunes together. ^__^

Scribalry -- been keeping my hand in here too! That "big seekrit project" I was working on when last I posted was a County scroll for Grand Contessa Vera upon stepping down as "plague Queen"; I did the bar and ivy frame for this overall spectacular scroll, and Vera suitably lost her shit over it. <3 I've been doing other scrolls too, mainly replacements for people who lost their original scrolls in fires and such -- working on the second such of these now.

Etc -- I wrote a paper (that's eventually going to be a class) on the medieval harp in the British Isles and entered it in the Wreath of Athena display/competition at Crown a couple weeks ago. I CAME IN SECOND!!! My first time ever doing such a thing -- I am still basking in the afterglow. XD I also researched and am registering a good new name, keeping the Ommadan part (as I've been known as such ever since I started playing in 1975, when heraldic things were much less... accuracy-informed XD). It's being decided even as I type -- hopefully it will go through!

Other than that, I'm considering applying to/volunteering for an office (either as Seneschal or Exchequer) within the Province of the Mists, which is starving for officers and in danger of going into abeyance as people move out of the very expensive Berkeley area. I would hate to see the birthplace of the SCA become inactive as an official group. Working on an SCA resume toward this end; we shall see what comes of it!

And I think that's everything up to now...

Things I Have Been Up To

Hi, it's me again with another long-overdue update!

Since my last update in February (good lord I am bad at this) I have been continuing to learn songs for my harp and practice practice practice. The plague has receded enough (and I am vaccinated enough, having gotten both shots back in March/April) that in-person activities are slowly resuming, and Telynor and I have taken to having our harp sessions face to face! Which means I am driving down to Half Moon Bay every Sunday (oooh twist me arm). Progress is being made on that front -- we have jammed to 'Woe Betyde Thy Wearie Body', with one doing the main melody and the other improvising over it. SO MUCH FUN! I am learning complete songs, too, instead of just fragments in Ann Heymann's book 'Coupled Hands for Harpers'; currently I am learning 'Maol Donaidh' and 'Teir Abhaille 'Riu' as well as the intro to 'Planxty Dru' and 'Cantiga #119' of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. My goal is to have a couple of these ready for West Kingdom Fall Crown (in person!) over Labor Day weekend so maybe I can join Telynor in playing for court. I CAN DO THIS! \o/

On the scribery front, I am taking part in a Secret Project (shhh don't tell) and my portion of it is coming up starting this week XD It's a giant big collab with a bunch of other scribes, and my part is the bar and ivy -- of which there is a LOT. I'm planning on having fun with it, as I have an excellent Kalish brush gifted me some time ago by Mistress Hilarie the Puppeteer, an illumination Laurel. Can't wait to get working on it! ^__^

Things are slow on the heraldry front, since I'm devoting the majority of my time to harpery and scribery, but that's okay, this Kingdom has a ton of heralds already. XD

So that's the June update! We'll see if I remember to update more frequently. XD

Scribery Has Been Did!

And I'm kinda proud of it XD This is an Award of Arms scroll for a gentle in the Far West who does brewing. His name is German, so I went with a late period German style. I'm especially proud of the cadel I did, entirely painted with gold gouache. And it's on an 8.5x11 sheet of pergamenata, which is devilishly hard to paint on -- you have to use very dry paint and brushes so the perg doesn't warp or buckle from the wet.

And a closeup of the cadel ^__^ It looks like ombre, but it's just the lighting XD (I'm not THAT good XD)

It just needs the royal signatures and seal and it'll be ready to go to the recipient. ^__^

I'm Bad At This Posting Thing, Aren't I...

Well, hi there! Yeah, I kinda dropped off the face of the planet again, but with good reason: I've been busy! I've been working on some scribal things, or was before the Great Plague broke out and confined us all to quarters -- the event the scroll I was working on was to be given out at had to be cancelled and I have to redo it, so I don't even have a WIP to show you. It's okay, I wanted to redo it anyway on different paper; my calligraphy bled all over the Arches watercolor paper, so I'm going to use a smaller sheet of pergamenata for the do-over. I'll post progress pics for that! XD

And I've been working with Telynor to get my wee harp up and playable again, and I'm SO CLOSE YOU GUYS. I have just about everything I need to restring it -- wire string, toggles for tying the wire so it will stay in the harp's soundbox, and video instruction from Telynor since we can't get together in person to work on it due to the aforementioned Plague. The only thing I'm missing is funnily enough hemostats, used for holding the wire secure while it's being wound around the toggle. And those will be arriving Saturday, yay!

Meanwhile I've been enabling a friend who used to play in the SCA get her interest up again and rediscover the fun it can be. XD She's an aspiring armorer. XD

So that's how I'm spending this downtime: taking classes online, casually redoing a scroll and leaving the date off of it, thisclose to restringing my harp, and playing Evil Enabler. ^__^ In other words, being even more social than I've been offline. XD

How are you guys?

Hello and Welcome

Greetings! My name in the SCA is Nadbroicc inigena Druisten (pronounced vaguely like NAWDbrick INNYgena DRISTden), aka Mouse. And I'm a harper who is relearning the wire-strung Gaelic harp, or clairseach! And I'm an old used scribe too! And a former herald who's looking to learn more! Persona-wise, I am a retired 5th c. Pictish warrior of the Catt tribe from Inse Catt (the Shetlands) who once raided as far as Dal Riada, and earned the nickname an Luch (the Mouse) because I am wee but fierce. I content myself these days with music and relearning to play my wee harp. SCA-wise, I'm a Companion of the Order of the Maunche (grant-level East Kingdom arts & sciences award; mine was earned in "Diverse Arts"). XD I currently live in the Barony of Nordskogen, Kingdom of Northshield, but I have lived in Caid, the East, the West, the Outlands when it was a principality of Atenveldt, the Middle, Meridies, and Drachenwald when it was a protectorate/principality of the East Kingdom. Yes, I am very well-travelled! I have been playing in the SCA since AS X, when I was known as Ommadan (names were a different beast back then XD). That makes me a bit of a geezer, but hey, I own that.

This journal is largely to document my endeavors in getting my harp playable again and relearning how to play. It'll also be my home for SCA stuff in general -- scribalry, heraldry, life events, like that. For more random witterings about the SCA and harpery etc., I have a Facebook page here. I also have an SCA resume here.

Welcome, have a seat and a cuppa! XD

A Few Days = A Few Weeks

So it's taken me a little longer than I thought it would to get things sorted, but sorted they are! I have a legal car again, I have scribal projects in my future, and life is pretty good! ^__^ This time around I'm posting one of the favorites of the scrolls I did before I left the East, an Award of Arms scroll for a late-period Landsknecht gentleman who's into throwing weapons. It was my first go at a cadel, and my first go at a figure modeled after the woodcuts and drawings of Albrecht Durer. As always, click on the small image to get to a bigger image.

I'm pretty pleased with this one -- I had fun with the cadel and the line art (the target was my design entirely XD). I know I wrote down the exemplars that I used somewhere, but I can't find them. This was done on Arches paper in Higgins ink, gouache, and Finetec gold.

More scrolls soon, I promise! ^__^

Holy Crow Pt.2: The Return of the Mouse

As I said in my last post, HOLY CROW IT'S BEEN AWHILE, HASN'T IT. A lot has transpired between then and now: for one thing, I'm now living in the West Kingdom, in the Province of the Mists -- basically where the SCA was started back in 1966. Pretty cool, huh? I've made some connections here, though I've been functionally car-less since the beginning of October so I haven't been able to develop those connections as much as I'd have liked to thus far. Hopefully that situation will be resolved soon, and I can get back to playing!

ANYWAY, I have some scrolls to post that I finished before I left the East Kingdom, and those will go up in a few days. To tide you over, though, I have a close up of the final version of the faux Arabic/Mamluk hand I developed for my first scroll. Click on the little image to get to a big image.

I hope all y'all have been well! <3

Holy crow, it's been awhile...

I have yet to even post anything here this year! Rest assured I have been busy scribing away -- gotten a few scroll assignments from the Tyger Clerk of the Signet, which I will post here eventually. XD (Before the year is out, I promise!

ANYWAY THE FIRST SCROLL I EVER DID FINALLY MADE ITS WAY TO ITS OWNER YAY. I don't know why it didn't go out at Pennsic, maybe the recipient didn't attend Court or something. Regardless, he got it at long last, and was over the moon, which made me feel super good as a scribe! It's a Silver Tyger (East Kingdom AoA-level fighting award) for a man with a Mamluk persona. I developed a faux Arabic hand for it at the last Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium I attended based off a Mamluk hand used for writing Quran. I used Finetec gold, gouache and Higgins ink on Arches paper. You can click on the image below for a bigger image.

Yay!

IN ME NEWS, I am prepping to move to the Province of the Mists out in West Kingdom!!! It's finally happening! I'm on the Who's Who out there already, though I won't be updating my entry until I'm actually out there in August. I'll miss my friends and household back here, and my Laurel(s), but I gotta do what I gotta do. <3 And I'm going to be adding heraldry to my repertoire of things I can do in the SCA once I'm there -- I'm actually an Old Used Herald of the book/armorial variety, who designed the arms of the then-Principality of Drachenewald. (There was a contest! I won!) So as well as scribal stuff, I'll be posting heraldic stuff here too going forward. Whee!

More soon!

Iron Scribe!

So a couple weekends ago I drove up to the Boston area to attend the Great Quintavian Iron Scribe Competition! A garb-optional event, it was really more like Great British Bake Off than anything; you entered into one of three categories, were given an exemplar to work from, and a time limit. Your piece was judged and you were awarded a prize! I had SO MUCH FUN. I entered in the Illumination category, cause I don't think my calligraphy is up to snuff, but I really should have done that too. XD

ANYWAY, I chose a bit of Italian white vine to do, just because I need work on that style. I placed third! ^__^ Here's what I did:

I'm going to finish it eventually and hand it in as a scroll blank. I hope there are more events like this in the East!

Revisiting Scroll Blanks

So some of you will have seen these before over on my personal journal, but I think it's been long enough that I can afford to show them again. Besides, this place is for documenting my progress, and if I'm not putting up everything I've done, I'm not documenting it properly, right? XD

ANYWAY. These four scrolls are blanks, meaning all that needs done on them is the calligraphy. Signet (the head scribe for the Kingdom) really likes blanks -- they can quickly fill a need for a surprise scroll going out at Court. All four of these are what are known as puzzle initials; the red and blue sections of the initial letter fit together like a puzzle piece. I love doing these, especially the pen flourishes. XD

The exemplars for these guys are as follows:
Blank A = 15th c. England, Arundel 11 f. 9, British Library
Blank B = Utrecht University Library
Blank F = 13th c. Italy or France, Arundel 287 f. 76, British Library
Blank G = 13th c. France, Arundel 134 f. 2, British Library

That last one, the A, was done in the hotel lobby at the Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium a couple years ago. XD The gold on it is actually metallic gold gouache. I'm especially pleased with that one. XD And the G was the first one I ever tried. Enjoy!

Inkulinati!

Before I post any of my scribal work, I came across a game today that was made just for scribes! It's called Inkulinati and it's coming soon to Steam. It looks hilarious and fun, and FINALLY I have an excuse/reason to install Steam on my laptop! XD
